Stillwater Medical Volunteer Program

Our volunteers play an important and meaningful role in both patient and non-patient care areas. There are a variety of opportunities suitable for every type of schedule, personality, preference or skill set. Whether you prefer to have a lot of patient contact, provide emotional support for families, help with technical or administrative duties, or simply give of your time by supporting fundraising efforts, we can match you with a position that will make a difference. The key qualities we require of our volunteers are a helpful, caring attitude and a respect for confidentiality.

Youth Volunteer Summer Session

Being a hospital volunteer in high school is a great way to test out the medical profession. But if you're not interested in pursuing a career in medicine and still want to volunteer, that's great too!

This eight-week program provides the opportunity for youth volunteers to learn about having compassion for others while gaining experience supporting patients, families, and staff in a hospital setting. In addition to the hospital setting, volunteers can also gain experience in the retail business by volunteering in the gift shop or snack bar.

As a volunteer, you won't be doing any actual medical procedures or advising patients. You'll simply be there to help with more basic tasks (such as delivering things and helping visitors and patients find their way around the hospital).

The 2024 youth application will be available from April 17 to May 15 through a link on this page.

Why volunteer? It’s proven that people who volunteer enjoy a sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction. And while you’re at it, you’re going to make new friends, support a good cause and possibly discover career opportunities!

Where can I volunteer? Volunteers provide services throughout the hospital, in nearly every service area, including:

Access Desk • Baby Caps • Cimarron Medical • Emergency Department • Endoscopy • Foundation • Gift Shop • Home Health • Registration Waiting Area/Reception/Host • Medical Plaza • Surgery Center West • Patient Services

How will I be trained? Volunteers are trained by the chairman of the service they select or by an experienced volunteer, who will provide an orientation session.

Who can volunteer? Anyone who is at least 14 years of age and is helpful, caring, and willing to respect confidentiality. We welcome people of all ages! There is no maximum age limit as long as the individual is physically able to work on the selected assignment.

Karman Legacy Hospice Volunteer Program

Hospices depend on their volunteers. Without the efforts of volunteers, hospices could not continue their important work. Patients and families depend on hospice care. No one else provides the kind of services that hospice does. By attending to the needs of both the patients and their loved ones, hospice care can be a huge comfort for the entire family.

Hospice Volunteers serve in many ways.

  • Keep the patient company
  • Listen to concerns
  • Be a support person
  • Read aloud
  • Help staff with office work and other behind-the-scenes tasks

Duties will vary depending on the patient’s and family’s needs as well as what the volunteer is able and comfortable doing.

Minimum Hospice Volunteer Requirements

The requirements for hospice volunteers have been put together by combining state regulations with those of Stillwater Medical’s Karman Legacy Hospice.

Volunteers are required to complete 12 hours of well-rounded self-directed core training and to attend at least three in-services a year. In-services are similar to most organization meetings: a discussion topic and/or speaker, announcements, and food. Additional training is required for volunteers who wish to learn more about bereavement and how to help families with the grief they experience after losing a loved one. Confidentiality forms, background checks, fingerprinting, and inoculations are also required for those who wish to volunteer. All volunteers are invited to participate in special events and parties. We ask our volunteers to do as much—or as little—as they can.

Those wishing to participate in Karman Legacy Hospice’s training sessions need to contact Valerie Bloodgood, KLH’s Volunteer Coordinator, at 405-377-8012 or stop by the KLH office at 1311 S. Western, Stillwater, OK 74074.
